Benhill and Belmont GP Centre operates from two surgeries both of which are fully equipped and patients attend one or the other surgery. (The majority, 60% of patients, are registered at Benhill Avenue.)

The practice consists at the present time of five GP Principals and four GP Assosciates caring for over 11,000 patients

The practice started shortly after World War 2 and Benhill Avenue was developed in the l960s, it has subsequently had several extensions added to the original building. The Belmont surgery was built in l990, having moved from small premises across the road. Belmont has already had an extension added.

We use a personal list system which despite the presence of two surgeries seems to work well. Our practice population is stable with less than l0% patient turnover per year. We have an above average number of elderly (over 75) patients at l0%. Ethnic Minorities make up 5% of the population of the London Borough of Sutton.

All doctors and staff are supported in broadening their medical practice and as well as primary care we have particular interest and expertise in minor surgery (Dr. Malik), family planning (Dr. Liyanage), occupational health and travel medicine. Dr. Croucher (Musculoskeletal Medicine) and Dr. Kaye (Dermatology) work sessions as GPs with a Special Interest. The Practice is involved in undergraduate teaching (St. George’s Hospital Medical School). In addition to the doctors we also have an excellent integrated nursing team with both community nurses and health visitors on site. Antenatal clinics are held weekly. We provide Extended Hours Surgeries during the week and all memebers of the clinical team are involved with this service

The practice is well organised and specific training in the financial aspects is available. The practice is involved with its local Primary Care Trust. We are a constituent part of the South West London Primary Care Organisation which is an overarching partnership of 7 practices that has been actively involved in the development of many local primary care initiatives and care pathways. We are presently involved with Practice Based Commissioning locally.

We provide a friendly, supportive learning environment with a wide range of opportunities. Dr Chris Elliott has been a trainer for many years and his Registrars work mainly at the Benhill Avenue site. Dr Jeffrey Croucher is based mostly at the Belmont site Practice and his Registrars will be primarily based there. We ensure that there is good opportunity for the Registrars (and Trainers!) to meet and undertake joint educational work through weekly tutorials on a one-to-one basis, video consultations, projects and clinical discussions at the practice meetings. Practice meetings are held weekly with full primary care team meetings monthly.
